STATUS QUO

The major hardware chain OBI offers tools and equipment for rent. But the rental business saw slower growth compared to other business areas. The goal was to discover new services that would drive stronger growth in this sector, increase sales and to make OBI fit for the future.

How might we increase OBI's rental tool sales through convenient services?

SOLUTION 01

Rent & Pick

Easily rent and return tools from a toolbox located in your close neighbourhood.

SOLUTION 02

Rent & Receive

Rent tools online and enjoy a timely delivery to your doorstep and pick-up once your done.

PROCESS

After analysing the historic sales data and conducting qualitative and quantitative user research in order to understand changes in user behaviour patterns, we ideated two distinct services, that would improve rental tool sales. Both ideas where then tested via quantitative fake door tests revealing a high demand for both solutions. To further assess feasibility and desirability in the field, within one week we implemented a delivery service in Hamburg and serviced more than 15 orders.
